Did your eggs come from tortured hens? If you shop at Safeway, the answer is likely yes. While Safeway competitors Target and Costco have pledged to eliminate cruel cages, Safeway still allows its egg suppliers to cram birds into cages so small they can barely move. This is animal cruelty no company with morals should support.

Dear Mr. Miller,

Safeway has long been an industry leader. But by failing to switch to a totally cage-free egg supply chain, the company is ignoring the public’s booming calls for better animal welfare and lagging behind its competitors, several of whom have made cage-free commitments in recent months.

Today’s egg factory farms subject millions of hens to unspeakable cruelty and neglect. Hens used for eggs are crammed into wire cages so small the birds can’t walk, spread their wings, or engage in other natural behaviors. Birds become trapped in the cage wires or under the feed trays, and dead hens are left to rot among the living. This is animal cruelty no company with morals should support.

That's why Target, Costco, and so many others have pledged to eliminate cruel battery cages from their egg supply chains. It’s high time that Safeway caught up to its competitors. As one of the nation’s leading retailers, Safeway has both the power and ethical responsibility to reduce the suffering of millions of birds each year.

Please take immediate action to address this issue by adopting a 100 percent cage-free egg policy, including an aggressive phase-in timeline, for all your stores and affiliate grocers.

Thank you.

Eggstreme Cruelty and Neglect

Stuffed in Cages

Hens used for eggs are crammed into wire cages so small the birds can’t walk, spread their wings, or engage in other natural behaviors.

Trapped and Trampled

Many birds become trapped and painfully mangled in the cage wire or under the feed trays. Without assistance, they sadly suffer and die.

Rotting Corpses

Dead hens are forgotten and left to rot alongside birds still laying eggs for human consumption.

Reduced to Cogs

Deprived of any comfort, these intelligent, sensitive animals are treated as mere egg-producing machines.
